Brief History of Alcantara

Alcantara used to be called "Kogtong" from a big fish which was said to inhabit a spring in the heart of the town. When the Spaniards came, they renamed the place Alcantara after a town in Spain.Alcantara became a town in 1830 as it separated from neighboring towns of Ronda and Moalboal.

During the Spanish regime, the following ruled the town:
  1. Kapitan Paoy
  2. Kapitan Arok
  3. Kapitan Domingo Yosores
  4. Kapitan Policarpo Tabanao

During the last days of the Spanish regime, Alcantara was made a barrio of the town of Dumanjug with Felipe Llenos as "Kapitan". When the Philippines became a Republic under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, LLenos was appointed as town chief.
